Humes, 23, of Herbert Road, Woolwich, beat 187,000 people who applied for the TV talent contest this year to be in one of the show’s final three acts.
Bandmates Jonathan Gill, Ortise Williams, and Aston Merrygold, will compete with Humes against bookies’ favourite Alexandra Burke and 16-year-old Eoghan Quigg. JLS will sing a duet with a surprise pop star.
“You can’t take it in, you know, it’s just incredible,” he said on last weekend’s semi-final show, in which two million votes were cast.
Humes, an estate agent, has been singing since he was five and attended Eglinton Primary and Eaglesfield School in Shooters Hill.
Music mogul Simon Cowell has predicted that JLS (Jack the Lad Swing) could win the competition, after the guy impressed him with their semi-final performance of Rihanna’s Umbrella. “[The choice] was either stupid or brilliant,” said Cowell, “and I have to tell you, it was brilliant.”
Making women hysterical
Girls Aloud judge Cheryl Cole also told the boys that their performances “cause some sort of hysteria amongst women”.
Her comments proved disturbingly true as up to 30 JLS fans were injured on Monday at a gig in Croydon in a crowd stampede blamed on poor security organisation.
The awesome foursome have provided cheeky entertainment (and testosterone) throughout ITV’s hit series, hip-thrusting whilst lying on the studio floor at the request of busty presenter Holly Willoughby- and who could forget Aston sporting an alarmingly skin-tight shiny red devil suit for Halloween.
Humes said on last week’s show: “We always take on board what the judges say to us. We just wanna be the best band we can be. It’s down to the people at home who have kept us in this competition.”
JLS’s mentor Louis Walsh said: “These boys deserve to be in the competition… There’s a big gap in the market for a band like this.”
However, bookies Paddy Power in Thamesmead have Burke as the favourite to win at odds of 4 – 7, Quigg at 3 – 1 and JLS as the outsiders at 7 – 2.
If the lads win the show they will release a new Christmas single – no doubt upholding the festive tradition of warm and fuzzy Christmas number ones from Cowell’s heavyweight show over the last few years.
Humes is no stranger to the pop charts – he was in now disbanded group VS who toured with boyband Blue and bagged a number 7 single with Love You Like Mad in 2004.
The X-Factor final is at 7.10pm on ITV on Saturday.
